Mansfield University of Pennsylvania is a public university in Mansfield, which is a borough located in southern Tioga County, in the US state of Pennsylvania, with a population of just little over 3000 inhabitants (2004). The borough is situated at the intersection of US Route 6 and US Business Route 15, approximately 36 miles southwest of Elmira, NY.
Mansfield University was established in 1983 and it is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. It first started as Mansfield Classical Seminary and became a state normal school in 1862. After being renamed Mansfield State Teachers College, and expended its degree offering, its name changed to Mansfield State College, the institution becoming a university and adopting its current name, in 1983.
The university currently offers its students 73 undergraduate, 9 graduate, 7 associate and 63 minors in a vast array of study areas.
Manfield's athletic teams are known as the Mounties, which compete in NCAA Division II, in 14 intercollegiate sports, among which there are: baseball, basketball, swimming, track & field, soccer and cross country. Their distinctive colors are red and black.
Mansfield's list of notable alumni includes names such as: William A. Stone - Pennsylvania Governor, Terry Pruyne - author of Sports Nicknames: 20,000 Professionals Worldwide, former Major League Baseball players Tom Brookens, Mike Gazella and Hughie Jennings, and US Congressmen William D.B.
